19th Century Landscape Painters from Rhode Island

Bert Gallery has assembled a group of late 19th and early 20th century landscapes from our inventory of Rhode Island artists. As a broker of many paintings some come to us in varying conditions, especially considering their age! These paintings are not on exhibit. They are “on the shelf” at the gallery, 540 South Water Street, available to view upon request.

The gallery is happy to assist with recommendations for restoration and framing when needed. As you peruse the slideshow the details of the condition, framing and provenance are listed with each work. Happy browsing and please call us with questions at (401) 751-2628 or e-mail us at bertgallery@conversent.net.

Landscape Painting:
This online exhibition provides a sampling of Rhode Island artists at the turn of the century. They painted a range of subject matter but many gravitated to landscape, struggling to represent new artistic visions whether it was capturing a transitional time of the season or the daily rhythms of life. In their day, these Rhode Island artists painted and exhibited, contributing to the national crusade to bring American aesthetic consciousness to parity with that of Europe. Through diligent work they developed technical craft and artistic proficiency to gain entry into national arenas including the 1876 Bicentennial Celebration in Philadelphia and the 1893 Columbian Exposition. In present day art circles, many are recognized for their prominence and merit in museum exhibitions at the Whitney, Corcoran and National Museum of American Art.
