Jame Maxfield
James Maxfield is a little known amateur Rhode Island artist who fathered the significant professional woman artist, Clara Maxfield Arnold (1879 - 1959). On display in the Studio Collection is a small body of his water colors of the Rhode Island Coastline. From his studio on Block Island, Maxfield often painted the sailing vessels going by, the lighthouses in Narragansett Bay and the unspoiled coastline.
Maxfield was born in
Fairhaven, Mass and plied his trade in Rhode Island in the
1800s as a commercial sign painter. He earned his living painting scenery
for theaters,
murals for churches and public buildings as well as signs. These
charming little works (average size 4 x 8) capture the feel of 19th
century Rhode Island.
Maxfield's prices range in the $400 - $650 range for framed images.
