Country Road
oil, 14" x 18" - $5,500

Marine and landscape painter, Henry Pember Smith was born in Waterford, CT in 1854 and died in Asbury Park, NJ in 1907. He set up a studio in New York City in 1877, and was a regular exhibitor at the National Academy of Design.

Working primarily in oils and watercolors, it is generally assumed that he was self-taught, with his landscapes of New England, New York State, Spain, Italy, England, France and Venice being his best known works. He portrayed his scenery in natural colors and used the daylight to bring both a subtle richness and dramatic brilliance into his paintings. His works are included in numerous collections, such as at the Yale University Art Gallery, The Newark Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, and The Hudson River Museum.
