Ruth Forrest
(1919 – 1994)
The Elephant and the Kangaroo
Thirteen illustrations 10” x 10”

In the 1940’s Ruth Forrest partnered with her sister to illustrate
a children’s story about the adventures of an elephant and kangaroo that ventured out from their home at Roger Williams zoo to discover the world. This charming collection of thirteen gouache paintings is currently for sale at Bert Gallery.

Ruth Forrest was a native of Rhode Island and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1940’s. Upon graduation she accepted a teaching position in the Cranston Schools where she remained for 38 years as an art instructor. During those productive years, Forest explored printmaking and watercolor painting. Her works were exhibited throughout the East Coast in juried exhibitions, including the Art Association of Newport, Northeast Printmakers Association, the Print Club of Philadelphia, the International Printmakers, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design.

Two of Forrest’s illustrations from The Elephant and the Kangaroo were included in the 2006 Newport Art Museum exhibit “Picturing the Page: A Legacy of Artist Illustrators” and also appeared in an American Art Review article by curator Nancy Whipple Grinnell – in February of 2006.
