The late nineteenth century Rhode Island artist, Sydney Burleigh shows the inventiveness and resilience of the creative spirit. Remnants of his success lay through Providence be it his Arts and Crafts inspired studio building, the Fleur de Lys on Thomas Street in Providence, his silhouettes in the hall of the Providence Art Club or his water colors in the RISD Museum of Art. The artist traveled and trained in Europe from 1878 1880 studying in the studio of Paul Lauren. In 1880 her returned to Providence and enjoyed a significant career as a painter. He exhibited both locally and nationally enjoying a reputation as one of the finest water colorists to emerge from the state. A new addition to the inventory is a water color of the Windmills of Zaandeim completed in Holland during his travel abroad. One of the fine examples of his command of the water color medium.
