The Bert Gallery website is a great resource on research on Rhode Island artists, including our Podcast section. Our current exhibit, Gallery Collection: Top Ten, features the work of Rhode Island artists who have come to the attention of art critics and academics. Listen to two podcasts on artists James Drummond Herbert and Sydney Burleigh to find out about their contributions to the art world.
Field and Flower, our new pocket show, celebrates Spring and includes the color saturated works of Paula Martiesian and Robert Thornton. Listen to interviews with both of these contemporary artists. There are two new postings in our Attic Sale and Art Market section – a beautiful Cirino in our New Inventory and a look at a Gordon Peers watercolor, San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice.

I hope you are enjoying the new updated website. Thank you for all of your positive feedback! On a monthly basis, I want to point out new sections and inventory highlights in an e-mail blast. This month, two great new additions to the site are a Drawings section under General Inventory (under the Gallery Collection section) – and under the At the Gallery section, look for the first entry in the The Price of a Picture. – Catherine Little Bert
Drawings
Edna Lawrence (1898-1987) loved to travel during her RISD summer break, where she taught Drawing in the Freshman Foundation Department. She often bought a passenger room on a freight ship and visited interesting locations as in this case the Caribbean. This pencil sketch is a fine example of her talent and love for travel.

The Price of a Picture
The Price of a Picture discusses Gardiner’s national reputation for color woodcuts. Here is an example of a 1920 color woodcut that demonstrates her sensitive portrayal of children, a subject matter collectors find endearing.
Pieces Pictured on Right:
1. Edna Lawrence, Woman Balancing Packages
Pencil, 8″ x 12″, $150.
2. Eliza Gardiner, On the Fence, 1920
Color woodcut, 7″ x 2.5″, $900.
