Gallery Happenings

There are two new online exhibits launched on the Bert Gallery website.

From the Stock list of George Whitaker (1841-1916)
George Whitaker was a critical figure in Rhode Island Art. He was one of the founders of the Providence Art Club in 1880, one of the earliest Providence artists to study with Millet protégés in France bringing back the Barbizon art style to Rhode Island and the first oil painting instructors at the Rhode Island School of Design.

However, Whitaker was also an avid collector of paintings from fellow artists in Providence. This slideshow has several paintings consigned from the des- cendents of George Whitaker – what a great provenance from his studio through three generations. We added a few extra Whitakers from the Bert Gallery inventory to round the slideshow out.

Paula Martiesian Curates Paula Martiesian
Paula has selected a number of newer paintings for viewers to explore. Two paragraphs from her artist statement describe her commitment to painting.

“I am a person seduced by color and addicted to tubes of paint. I am a person who spends much of her life juggling the demands of time, the limitations of space and the politics of color on a three by four foot canvas. I am a person who believes most of the world’s problems could be solved if only I could get that lower left hand corner of a painting to behave.

On any given day, you will find me in my studio deep in negotiations with cobalt blue and permanent rose. But eventually the negotiations cease, the painting is dressed up in a frame and off it goes to rest on a wall somewhere in a gallery or in someone’s home. Then I step back and the painting begins a life of it’s own – a life without me.”

Visit our newly organized PODCAST section on the website and stay tuned for new entries.
