George Whitaker – “Surrounded by Nature”

Surrounded by Nature, 1905  by George Whitaker (1841 – 1916)

original gold leaf frame

George Whitaker ( 1841-1916) is one of the most identified and beloved historic Providence artists.  A founder of the Providence Art Club and a painting instructor at Rhode Island School of Design he is known as the Dean of Rhode Island Artists.

This oil on canvas 37″ x 24″ by Whitaker is one of his favorite topics – looking at the immense beauty and pleasure of the natural surrounding.  Whitaker was a proponent of the Barbizon School of Painters led by Francois Millet where farmers and workers were celebrated for their labor and unity with the land.

A special treat is the label on the back.  Whitaker shopped locally and ordered his frame from Henri Dore a gilder on North Main Street.

The Gilbert Stuart museum is hosting an exhibit organized by curator Nancy Whipple Grinnell –
