Koehler-Bittkow (1897-1964), a Bauhaus pioneer

With the opening of the Bauhaus exhibition at Harvard this month – an often overlooked student of the school is Margarete Koehler-Bittkow.  A bit about the artist and her Bauhaus tenure.

Margarete Koehler-Bittkow 1897 – 1964

1919-1923  Koehler-Bittkow was admitted into a group of 150 students at the Bauhaus, and within six months was recognized as highly talented in the weaving workshop, which she chose as her department in 1920. Three of her wall hangings and one of her table cloths from this period are exhibited at Harvard University’s Busch-Reisinger Museum and at the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar.
