About NMWA
The mission of the National Museum of Women in the Arts is to exhibit and celebrate the accomplishments of women in the history of art. When the Museum opened 24 years ago, there was not one woman artist in the leading text in our country, which was used in every college and university for the study of the history of art. There had been practically no exhibitions of art by women at museums. Women were not represented in collections. In spite of this, women artists have a legacy of which to be proud. Through our state and international committees and with a sizeable membership we have enlightened many. Our educational programs enable children to grow up knowing about women artists. Our masterpieces are sought for loans by other major museums. We have staged major exhibitions on Camille Claudel, Native American Women Artists, and Judy Chicago.
However, we still have far to go and challenges to be met. There are fewer reviews of work by women, less representation in major galleries, and female artists earn less than their male counterparts. Except in art circles, most well educated people cannot name five women artists. A little girl must come from a fairly sophisticated family in our country to even know Mary Cassatt. Because we believe strongly in what we are doing, we on the National Advisory Board of the Museum are writing to our families and friends to ask them to become members. Members receive free and unlimited admission to the Museum, a year’s subscription to our magazine, Women in the Arts, discounts on books, exhibition catalogues, and unique jewelry and gifts from our Museum Shop and online at www.nmwa.org, as well as exclusive invitations to our Member Exhibition Previews and other events. As the Museum moves into its third decade, now is a perfect time to ask you to play a role in assuring its continued success, vitality and influence by becoming a member.
