Mimi Sammis
"Celebration of Life," a series of bronzes by Mimi Sammis, represents the artist's interest in both the natural and the spiritual worlds. The idea of expressing the intangible as well as the physical through sculpted works of art has been a pursuit of mankind since images were first drawn on walls of caves. Sammis begins her work in wax, and then finishes with bronze, a material formed by earth and fire. This series of sculptures is monumentally successful in making the spirit a reality to the senses of sight and touch. Expressing her realization that "life is a banquet,: her bronzes are powerful images, full of elation, movement and joy.
Sammis is currently focusing on garden and park pieces which incorporate fountains and movable figures. Three sculptures, mounted on rotating bases, are on public display in Aspen. The artist is delighted by the interaction the viewer is able to have, not only through seeing the works, but also by moving and touching the sculptures.
A resident of Aspen, Colorado, and Narragansett, Rhode Island, Sammis studied at Yale and the Rhode Island School of Design. She has lived and worked in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Sammis is represented by Sally Harvey Gallery in Aspen, New York and San Miguel. Her work is included in many public and private American and European collections.
